The Story
Ruphea was created with the distinctive shapes of the Bulgarian letters in mind. The Bulgarian alphabet belongs to the Cyrillic script, but most Cyrillic fonts are adapted to the needs of the Russian alphabet
Although similar, the Bulgarian and the Russian letterforms are far from identical. Notably, the Bulgarian Cyrillic alphabet emphasises lower-case letters based on their handwritten forms, diverging from the practice of simply scaling down upper-case ones.
The lack of variety of fonts with the Bulgarian form of Cyrillic is the reason why Gergana Nikolova decided to create RUPHEA – a font honouring Bulgarian culture and history.

About
Hi! My name is Gergana.
Currently, my graphic design practice is concerned with type design and arrangement of text.
As a type designer, I find inspiration in the beauty of handwritten expression. My font, Ruphea, is a testament to this ethos, capturing the organic flow and individuality of handwriting within each character.
Furthermore, in my journey as a type designer, I’ve discovered a profound connection between typography and poetry. Much like poetry, typography has the power to evoke emotions, convey meaning, and spark imagination through the arrangement of words and letters.
Ruphea, with its rhythm and flow, is a poetic expression in itself .
